While falling is certainly to be avoided, it is normal for anyone to have an occasional mishap and fall.  Rather than if, think when. While falls can be catastrophic and I have had the honor of spending lots of time with people who have serious injuries from fall, most falls do not put the faller into the ICU. To minimize harm from falling I recommend you learn and practice tricks to fall smoothly and safely.

By safely practicing how to protect yourself during a fall, you can conquer your fear of ending up helpless on the floor.

Tips:

  • Let the fall take a relatively long time to complete. In other words, give your potential energy up to the pavement slowly.
  • Let a large surface area of the body absorb the impact.
  • Tuck your chin.
  • Twist or roll to land on your buttocks and side instead of falling straight forward or straight onto the back.
  • Keep wrists, elbows and knees bent.
  • Make the body as “round” as possible.
